2015-16 Winter Appeal
UKSFBR has been set up to raise funds in the UK, and to source and purchase bulk quantities of shoes, waterproof jackets, fleeces, backpacks, sleeping bags and tents, as required by refugees arriving on Kos this winter, and as requested by the voluntary humanitarian organisations currently working on the ground. We will deliver them to these partner organisations in Kos and, depending on the success of the appeal, Lesbos and other Greek islands, who will distribute them through their existing channels. We are particularly concerned with helping the refugees cope with their winter journey into Europe. This will be an ongoing project, running until the refugees stop coming.
Humanitarian Support on Kos Island
Humanitarian support for refugees on Kos is delivered by both professional and volunteer oranisations working in cooperation.UNHCR, Red Cross and MSF are the professional international humanitarian organisations.
Their primary role so far has been to negotiate with the EU, Greek and Kos authorities in order to provide an efficient registration process for the refugees and enable safe passage for them through to Athens. In October UNHCR set up a transit camp for unaccompanied children, a piece of land was also allocated for use as a transit camp for the remainder of the refugees where they will have shelter and hygiene facilities whilst on the island. MSF is the principal health care provider for the refugees. These main actors rely heavily on local volunteer organisations to provide direct humanitarian care and aid to the refugees.KS, KRNYH and BRF are the key volunteer humanitarian organisations.
Their primary role has been to provide non-medical first aid to the refugees using aid supplies and funds donated by family, friends and the public. As winter approaches all three organisations are calling out for key items to be sent to Kos to meet the increasing need of the refugees.
